ASSIGMENT 4- LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH MIXED ELEMENTS AND FEATURES

For this assignment I chose to paint a view of the river with drinking cows. I wanted to include elements like water, rocks, some perspective and animals (as I thought this would make the painting more interesting). I used a work from one of the exercises showing a river and the sketches of the cows as preparatory work, I used the cow sketches and placed the cows in the water. I think this choice of composition is a link to British watercolour tradition with people such as Thomas Girtin and William Turner doing similar things. I was happy with the preparatory work and wanted to return to the same place which included a waterfall and lots of rocks but I was not brave enough to try to copy the techniques of the past master but instead used my own technique mostly using small blotches of paint close to each other to create the whole painting. I did the painting on 76x56cm format water colour paper.
