ASSIGNMENT ONE WATERCOLOUR

Project number 1

For all of these paintings I used A3, Grain Fin Cold Pressed NOT 140lbs Watercolour paper.

I started my project for the assessment from an imaginary dreamscape. A year ago when i was on holiday in the south of France I saw two sculptures with the sea in the background and the thing that looked interesting wasn’t the figures on their own but the contrast of the figures, the sea and the blue sky, so I did a sketch and then I painted the first picture after painting this I put it into water so the paint could faint and used sponged and removed some paint and made random marks, I think I used two techniques.

Then I did another painting using masking fluid for the figures and painted wet-on-wet sky and sea.

For the third painting I changed the palette and painted wet-on-wet sky and sea and then painted the figures and tried to make a connection between the sky and figures so I put the whole piece of paper into water so the paint could fade and I used a hard brush to create some light marks on the sky to create an effect of light and I think I used two techniques for this. If I need to choose for assessment I would choose the third painting.

Project number 2

At the same time I worked on the project ‘wood’. I painted a black wood and put it under the tap and made it wet and removed some of the paint.

Then I made a second painting for which I used a blue colour to create the woodland and again I put it under water and then used a soft brush to remove paint and make white marks on the trees. Some areas of this painting are successful but some were not.

So I decided to do another painting which had more contrast for which I did not use any techniques but just put another layer of paint on some area. This painting does not qualify for the assessment but I would still like to show you as I am happy with the freshness and contrast in this piece even f it is not successful overall.

I then did a fourth painting which fit into the two technique standard. I used the things I learned from the fish paintings and after wetting it I made white marks and then I used another layer. This is my second proposition the the assessment.

I then did another different woodland. After I did the painting in blue I put it under the water so it could fade and then removed some paint using a brush and created some marks using a brush on the top of the paintings which may be hard to see as they are nearly white, when the painting dried I used a different colour to paint a bigger branch. I am not sure if this fits in with the two techniques standard.

I then did the last painting. For the trees i used a masking fluid and painted the background wet-on-wet after removing the masking fluid I put in another coat of paint in some places in the background and then put the painting under the water, after the paper was wet I used a paintbrush to connect the trees with the background so the trees are now not fully white. This is my third proposition for the assessment because this is not a formal assessment I would like some feedback from you to see which one would be best and could get the best marks.

Reflection after tutor feedback

After I received the feedback I was very surprised that it was positive as I this was the first time I used watercolour. I chose this course as I thought it would be useful for my painting studies. Overall comments were very technical and mature. At this point in the course I wasn’t expecting more than just a few comments but was very happy with the feedback and advice I was given. I was pleasantly surprised how detailed the feedback was and I found this really helpful. It also helped that I was given artist to look at as I can use those to improve my techniques and learn about the history of watercolour in a more advanced way. Now I know how to work and what to do to finish this course.
